Business Insurance

Cover built around how your business actually runs

Sarre Insurance Broking Services arranges business insurance for companies across Perth, from sole traders to multi-site operations.

The policies a business needs depend on what it does, who it employs, what it owns and what its contracts oblige it to hold. We work through that with you rather than handing over a package, and we tell you plainly what each policy does not cover.

Why choose Sarre?

Cover matched to your business

A café, a labour hire firm and an engineering consultancy carry different
exposures and need different wordings. We work from what you actually do,
including what your contracts and your industry regulator require you to
hold.

We lodge the claim, present it with the evidence the insurer needs, and
follow it through. If we think a decision is wrong we put the argument, and
escalate to internal dispute resolution or AFCA where that is warranted.

Cover across your exposures

Property, liability, people, motor, cyber and management liability under
one programme, with one broker who can see where the policies overlap and
where they leave gaps.

Cover we arrange for WA businesses

The cover a business needs depends on what it does, what it owns, who it employs and what its contracts oblige it to hold. Most programmes are built from two halves: cover for physical assets, and cover for the income those assets produce. The second is the one businesses most often get wrong.

These are the policies we most commonly arrange. Not every business needs all of them, and several can be taken as standalone cover where the exposure warrants it.

business insurance explained

Cover for the building itself against fire, storm, impact and other insured damage. If you own your premises, check the sum insured reflects what it would cost to rebuild today, including demolition and current building codes, rather than what you paid.

Covers theft of and accidental damage to equipment you take away from your premises: tools, laptops, phones and portable plant. Most business packs sub-limit this heavily, so it is worth checking the figure against what you actually carry.

Physical loss, damage and theft of contents and stock at a specified location. Stock values move with your trading cycle, so a sum insured set at a quiet point in the year can leave you short at the busy one.

Third party injury and property damage arising from your activities or your premises. Contracts frequently specify a minimum limit and require the principal to be named, and we check that your policy actually delivers what you have signed up to.

Claims arising from goods you have manufactured, imported, supplied or sold, including damage caused after they leave your control. Claims can surface years after the sale.

Claims alleging errors, omissions or negligent advice in the professional services you provide. Most wordings are written on a claims made basis, which means the policy in force when the claim is made responds, not the one in force when the work was done. That matters when you change insurer or wind up.

Vehicles, plant and equipment against loss and damage, from a single ute to a fleet. Cover can extend to hired-in plant, wet and dry hire, heavy haulage and carriers.

The income you lose and the extra costs you incur when insured damage stops you trading. Two things catch businesses out. It normally only responds if your property policy pays the underlying damage claim, so the two have to be set up together. And the indemnity period is the maximum time the policy will pay for, where twelve months is often not long enough to rebuild, re-fit and get customers back.

Response costs after an incident, including IT forensics, system restoration and notifying affected customers. Your own losses, including lost profit and increased cost of working. Third party claims and regulator investigations following a notifiable data breach. Some wordings also cover funds lost to cyber theft and socially engineered payment fraud.

Claims against the business and its directors personally: employment practices such as unfair dismissal, bullying and discrimination; statutory fines and penalties where insurable; regulator investigations; breach of directors’ duties; and theft by employees.

Loss or damage to glass at your premises, internal and external. Relevant if you hold a lease that makes you responsible for the shopfront, which many retail leases do.

The accounting and professional fees incurred responding to an audit or review by the Australian Taxation Office. Covers the cost of the response, not any tax or penalty assessed.

Sudden and unforeseen breakdown of machinery, plant and electronic equipment, which standard property cover excludes. Available inside a business pack or as a standalone policy where the exposure warrants it.

Compulsory in WA for any business employing workers. Note that unincorporated subcontractors can be deemed workers, which means they fall under your policy and appear at premium audit.

Workers Compensation & Related Insurances

Workers compensation is compulsory in WA for any business that employs workers, and it is regulated by WorkCover WA. It covers medical costs, lost wages and rehabilitation for work-related injury or illness, and responds to common law damages where the employer’s negligence caused the injury.

Contractors are not automatically outside your policy. Unincorporated subcontractors can be deemed workers, which means they fall under your cover and show up at premium audit. If you engage subcontractors, this is worth checking before audit rather than after.

Commercial Motor Insurance

Cover for your motor vehicles, plant and equipment against loss and damage. Cover can extend to wet or dry hiring

e.g. Transport Operators, Heavy Haulage, Carriers, Trucks, Vehicle Fleet and Mobile Plant & Equipment Insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

The specific types of insurance your business needs will depend on its size, industry, and operations. Most businesses require property insurance, public liability insurance, and workers’ compensation at a minimum. Professional services may also need professional indemnity insurance, while larger businesses may benefit from business interruption and management liability cover.

Our brokers work closely with you to understand your business operations and risks. We assess your current insurance needs, recommend suitable coverage options, and tailor an insurance package to match your business profile.

It covers the income you lose and the extra costs you incur when insured damage stops you trading.

Two things catch businesses out:

First, it normally only responds if your property policy pays the underlying damage claim, so the two have to be set up together.

Second, the indemnity period is the maximum time the policy will pay for, and twelve months is often not long enough to rebuild, re-fit and get customers back. If a month without trading would hurt, it is worth a conversation about what your indemnity period should be.

Our claims advocacy team lodges the claim, gathers the documentation the insurer needs, and follows it through to a decision. We interpret the wording, push back where we think a position is wrong, and escalate to the insurer’s internal dispute resolution process or to AFCA where that is warranted. You still need to notify us promptly and provide the records the insurer asks for.

We recommend reviewing your insurance policies annually or whenever there are significant changes in your business, such as expansion, new locations, or increased staff. Our brokers will work with you to ensure your coverage remains adequate as your business evolves.
